Mohan Bhargava, played by Shahrukh Khan works as a Project manager with NASA in America. He has been cared for by his nanny named Kaveri Amma while growing up and after his parent’s death she moved to an old age home in Delhi. Mohan take a few weeks off to travel to India and bring Kaveri Amma to the US. When he reaches the old age home he learns that she is now living in a village called Charanpur. He then hires a friends caravan and drives to Charanpur. There Kaveri Amma is delighted to meet Mohan, and he is emotional on seeing her. But she is not willing to go to the US. He then learns that Kaveri Amma was brought to Charanput by Geeta, played by Gayatri Joshi after the death of her parents. She is not happy on seeing Mohan as she knows he will take her away. She even previously misguides him to reach the village.
Slowly Mohan begins to like Geeta, at how independent and strong views she has about marriage and the village education. She teaches in a local school and wants to get more girl children to join school. Mohan decides to help her get more gild students and in the process learns of the old traditions and values that the villagers still follow. Kaveri Amma then asks Mohan to go to a distant village named Kodi and collect money from a man named Haridas, which he owes to Geeta. Since the caravan cannot go there, he takes the help of a local man named and travels to Kodi by bus and then by boat. He is saddened at the helpless conditions Hardas lives in. His poverty and helplessness makes Mohan give money to Hardas as a way of help rather than take anything from him. This turns out to be a life changing moment for Mohan.
Mohan returns from Kodi and tells Kaveri Amma at what he saw and decides to help the villagers. He helps with generating electricity through water in the village. His opposing views on the development on India and its backwardness however is disliked by the elders. Meanwhile Geeta and Mohan fall in love. He leaves for the US and promises to be back. He then comes back to Charanpur for good. The movie is directed and produced by Ashutosh Gowariker and Rnnie Screwvala. The music is composed by A.R Rahman.
