Rukhsana, played by Shabana Azmi is happily married to Anwar, played by Rishi Kapoor. They have two beautiful daughters Tehzeeb and Nazneen. Anwar’s mental health starts deteriorating over the next few years and he goes into depression. He then commits suicide. The family is shaken with this tragedy. The court rules our Rukhsana’s involvement in Amwar’s death but elder daughter Tehzeeb, played by Urmila Matondkar holds her mother responsible. Their hostility grows. Tehzeeb grows up and marries Salim, played by Arjun Rampal and she takes her sister Nazneen, played by Dia Mirza, who is mentally disabled, to stay with her.
After 5 years Rukhsana comes to visit her daughters. Although Tehzeeb is happy to see her mother, soon the past haunts her and the differences surface. Soon they remember their good memories. Things again turn terrible when Nazneen shoots herself. It is then revealed that their father committed suicide. Her mother requests to take Nazneen with her and reluctantly Tehzeeb agrees. However on the day her mother and Nazneen are to leave Tehzeen apologizes but sadly her mother has a heart attack and dies.
The movie is directed by Khalid Mohammed and produced by Paresh Talpade. The music is composed by A.R Rahman. The cinematography is by Santosh Sivan.
