Ruth, played by Kalki Koechlin, has a British mother and an Indian father. She sister commits suicide at a young age and now she has come to India to look for her father. Although growing up, Ruth didn’t know her father very well, she cannot get him out of her head due to a letter he has written to her. Out of work and desperate to find her father, Ruth begins to work in a shady massage parlour where she is asked to do sexual favors to few of her clients.
Living a torturous yet peaceful life in her own little world, Ruth makes Mumbai her home. The more she wants to get out the more the city’s underbelly keeps sucking her into its dark alleys. Meanwhile she meets a drug addict prashant and begins to date him. Even though there are times he torments her, he turns out to be her savior on other occasions. Later Ruth finds out that her father has joined one of the religious cults of one of the strange godmen around. This brings her quest of finding her father to an end.
The movie is written, directed and produced by Anurag Kashyap and co-produced by Guneet Monga. The story is co-written by Kalki Koechlin. The music is composed by Naren Chandavarkar and Benedict Taylor. The cinematography is by Rajeev Ravi.
