The movie is set in Goa during the last leg of the colonial rule of the Portuguese. The story of the film revolves around a family living there at the time. Ana is a young and pretty young girl who is being forced to marry Erasmo. She however is deeply in love with Leon but is unable to do anything about it. Just as the days of her marriage are drawing close, one day Ana faints and to her horror finds out that she is expecting Leon’s child. Meanwhile Ana’s grandfather passes away and her grandmother is shocked by this. She calls off the engagement indefinitely and tries to find ways to talk to the soul of her beloved husband, all the while calling on unwanted souls in stead.
Meanwhile Ana elopes with Leon leaving a letter behind, and settles in Portugal. She gives birth to a son. Meanwhile Milagrina, her maid gets pregnant by Ruiz but marries a old man from another village. The film is directed by Shyam Benegal and produced by Blaze. The music is composed by Vanraj Bhatia and Remo Fernandes. The cinematography is by Ashok Mehta. The star cast includes Leela Naidu, Neena Gupta, Anita Kanwar, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Naseeruddin Shah and Soni Razdan.
