Dilawar Khan is arrested and imprisoned on the testament given by man in Faizabad. To take revenge for this he kidnaps his daughter Amiran, one day from their home and sells her off to a brothel in Lucknow, which is run by Khannum Jaan, played by Shabana Azmi. She is then adopted by Bua Hussaini and Maulvi Sahib and taken to be their own daughter. Amiran learns the art of being a courtesan or tawaif. She grows up to be a charming and graceful dancer named Umrao Jaan, played by Aishwarya Rai. Her beauty catches the eye of Nawab Sultan, played by Abhishek Bachchan. They have a passionate affair and fall in love. However, when Nawab’s father comes to know of the affair, he is furious and throws him out of the house penniless. Nawab then goes to stay with his uncle in Ghari.
Umrao meanwhile waits for Nawab’s return. Faiz Ali, played by Sunil Shetty hears of Umrao’s beauty and goes to visit her. She rejects his romantic advances and later agrees to accompany him to Daulatabad when she realizes that they will pass through Ghari. Faiz gets arrested and comes to know that Umrao only accompanied him to meet Nawab. He then spreads false rumors that Umrao and him had a sexual relationship. Nawab is furious at hearing this and confronts Umrao. He sends her back to Lucknow disgraced and humiliated.
A heartbroken Umrao then gets raped by her childhood friend Gauhar, played by Puru Raajkumar. After the British attack she returns to her hometown. Her father is long dead but her mother and brother refuse to accept her as family due to her profession. A dejected Umrao Jaan lives in Lucknow only with her poetry and memories. The movie is written, directed and produced by J. P Dutta. The music is composed by Anu Malik.
