Upkar a 1967 film is directed by Manoj Kumar. The film did well at the box office and with this fim, Manoj Kumar got the title of Bharat for the personal and his brand on Patriotism with fearless courage that he portrayed in his films.
In the film Manoj Kumar plays the role of a village man called ‘ Bharath’ who works hard to give his brother education and sacrifices everything to send his brother Puran ( Prem chopra) abroad. Prem Chopra becomes a rich man and returns to India but is now a proud and a very selfish man influenced by his greedy uncle Charandas ( Madan Puri) . Puran also gets into a racket of selling drugs and does black marketing. When the India Pakistan war starts, Bharat decides to enroll himself and head the border while his brother gets caught by the police and he repents and takes a vow to change himself to becoming a good and hardworking like his brother . Bharath returns as the veteran after the Pakistan India War.
The film starring besides Manoj Kumar along with Prem Chopra, are Asha Parkekh, Saira Banu and Pran who is seen in his first positive role. Kamini Kaushal also plays the character role in the film. This film won many awards. The film is said to be inspired from the film Ikiru of 1952 by Akira Kurosawa and was remade in Malayalam language.
