Shamsher Singh lives with his son Pratap and daughter in law in a village. They lead a peaceful life until Pratap, who is a tough police inspector refuses to give into gangster Jagawar’s demands. The latter wants Pratap to help him run his illegal activities smoothly. On refusing he kills Pratap. Shamsher is horrified at the sight of his dead son and kills some of Jagawar’s goons. He then escapes with his daughter-in-law but
soon she delivers a baby boy named Kunal and dies. Shamsher then flees with his grandson to start life anew. To bring up his grandson in a respectable way, he joins Sir Mizya and starts working for him. After a few years he becomes the chairman and a powerful man. He also changes his name to Shobraj. Meanwhile Kunal falls in love with Durga who is Shamsher’s old employee’s daughter living in the slums. When Shamsher comes to know about this he is against the union and warns Durga’s mother to leave town with her daughter. Reluctantly Durga leaves with her mother in a boat to Goa. Shamsher’s men try to molest her. Abu Baba, who is the caretaker of Kunal comes to their rescue but gets killed. Kunal swears to take revenge for Abu’s murder and eventually learns the truth about his grandfather’s real identity. The film is directed by Subhash Ghai and produced by Sulshan Rai. The star cast includes Dilip Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Padmini Kolhapure, Shammi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Amrish Puri, Madan Puri, Suresh Oberoi, Jagdeep, Viju Khote, Mukri, Narendra Bedi, Nadira, Komila Virak, Sudha, Komila and Sarika.
