Lala is a wealthy widower living with his daughter Suman and son Shashiraj. Lala hopes some day his kids will marry into influential and rich families like his. However his dreams are crushed when he comes to know that Suman is in love with a poor man called Ajit and Shashiraj loves the poor girl Rita. Suman meanwhile marries Ajit despite her father’s objections and gives birth to a son named Vicky. A pregnant Rita is approached by Lala and told to leave Shashiraj and gives her a blank cheque. Things take a tragic turn when Shashiraj dies in a plane crash. Rita then gives birth to a son named Arjun.
Years later Arjun and Vicky meet but they have no idea that they are cousins. Things will get even more complicated when they learn the truth about what their father has done. The film is directed and produced by Yash Chopra. The music is composed by Shiv Hari and the story is written by Sachin Bhowmik. The screenplay is written by Mushtaq Jalili, Sachin Bhowmik and Surendra Prakash. The star cast includes Anil Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Saeed Jaffrey, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Sonam, Shakti Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Parikshit Sahni, Anju Mahendru, Parijaat, Manmohan Krishna, Bharat Bhushan, Arjun Sablok, Master Neli, Nitin Mukesh, Raj Babbar, Rajesh Khanna, Anjana Mumtaz and Moushumi Chatte.
