Shakti returns to his village after completing his studies in the UK. His modern girlfriend Anita too accompanies him back. His father Raja Thakur frowns upton this development but is happy to have his son back. He however disapproves of their marriage. Shakti finds that the village has the same narrow and conservative attitude and is frustrated by it, especially the fued between his dad and his crippled brother Birju. While Anita leaves to see her family in another part of India, Shakti too plans to follow her soon but is unable to as things take a drastic turn for the worse. Shakti’s dad suddenly passes away, leaving all the responsibility to him.
Shakti sees that the condition of the people and the village is bad and wants to help out. One day he meets a village girl Gehna who comes from a poor family and is in love with Shakti. He is then forced to marry her but accepts her as his wife. When Anita returns, she is devastated to know that Shakti is already married. She leaves back with a heavy heart. Shakti now takes the reins of the village in his hands, just like his father. The movie is directed by Priyadarshan and produced by Nushir Riaz. The music is composed by Anu Malik and the lyrics are written by Javed Akhtar. The cinematography is by Ravi K Chandran and the choreography is by Farah Khan and Kala. The screenplay is written by Vinay Shukla.
