Daanish, played by Farhan Akhtar is working as an Anti-Terrorism Squad officer. He is happily married to Ruhana, played by Aditi Rao Hydari and has a daughter Noorie. One fateful day, Daanish spots a most wanted terrorist on the streets while he is driving his wife and daughter. In the ensuing shooting his daughter is killed and a shattered Ruhana blames Daanish.
At Noorie’s grave, a depressed Daanish decides to end his life when he sees a car drive by. The car belongs to Noorie’s chess teacher Omkar, played by Amitabh Bachchan who tells him of his own daughter Nina’s death. He tells him that Nina used to teach chess to a minister Qureshi’s daughter Ruhi. One fateful day he gets the news that she has slipped and fallen off the stairs, resulting in her death. Omkar has a feeling it’s not an accident.
To uncover the truth behind Nina’s death, Daanish tries to meet Qureshi but is refused. Later he goes to Ruhi’s school to talk to her about the incident but Qureshi stops her and threatens Daanish with severe consequences. One of Qureshi’s henchmen, Wazir, played by Neil Nitin Mukesh is sent to attack Omkar and warns him and Daanish to not bother Qureshi.
It is later revealed that there is no one called Wazir. Ruhi also reveals, that Qureshi is not her real father he just a militant who killed her entire village and when the Army troops came he only posed as her father. When she told this truth to Nina, Qureshi mercilessly murdered her. During One of Ruhana’s play Daanish comes to a deep realization that Wazir was a fictional character created by Omkar to not look powerless in front of Qureshi and he sacrificed his life to get him killed at the end.
