Lallan Singh, played by Abhishek Bachchan is from Bihar but settled in Kolkatta, ever since his brother abandoned him. He is married to the beautiful Shashi Biswas, played by Rani Mukerjee, who he loves and also abuses at times. Michael Mukherjee, played by Ajay Devgn is a student leader who wants to protect his college from corrupt politicians. He is in love with his neighbor Radhika, played by Esha Deol. Arjun, played by Vivek Oberio is happy go lucky and in love with Meera, played by Kareena Kapoor, who meets randomly one day. They meet and spend time together and she loves him too.
After a quarrel one day she leaves in a taxi and Arjun follows her by taking a life from Michael, who he doesn’t know. But unfortunately at that time, Michael gets hit by a bullet but Arjun saves him and decides to be a politician himself by being influenced by Michael. A corrupt politician Prosenjit hears of students standing for elections and bribes Michael with a foreign university scholarship but he refuses it. He then orders Lallan to beat up his friends and kill his brother. He then kidnaps Arjun and his friends but they escape.
Later Lallan beats up Arjun and later Michael comes to save him and hands Lallan over to the police. Meanwhile his wife Sashi leaves him and goes back to her hometown. The movie is directed by Mani Ratnam and produced by Shekhar Kapoor, Mani Ratnam and G. Shrinivasan. The music is composed by A.R Rahman.
