Rakesh is an unemployed youth who comes to Delhi from his home town in Bihar in search of a lucrative job. He however is unable to find anything and ends up staying with two friends Amit and Tilak. Rakesh then one day meets a beautiful girl named Kusum at a bus stop and helps her carry her bags. Some misunderstanding happens and she gets angry with him. Later Kusum, who is a upcoming theatre actress decides to help Rakesh and makes him meet the drama director Pratap who is also secretly in love with Kusum. He hires him as an actor but
soon comes to know about the growing closeness between Kusum and Rakesh and gets furious. He then fires Rakesh. The latter begins to work as a clerk in another office but dislikes that job and gets fired. Meanwhile Pratap proposes marriage to Kusum and she accepts on the condition that he give a job to Rakesh at his businessman father’s company. When Rakesh learns this condition, he refuses the job. In the end love wins all and Kusum and Rakesh unite. The film is directed by K Balachander and produced by R Venkataraman. The music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. The star cast includes Kamal Haasan, Mazhar Khan, Anita Raj, Nilu Phule, Arjun Chakravarty, Aroon Bakshi, Karan Razdan and Ram Mohan.
