In the year 1988, when Amitabh Bachchan returned to the screen as 'Shahenshah' and Rekha, like Amitabh, made a comeback with a bang in 'Khoon Bhari Maang' and 'Biwi Ho To Aisi', both of their careers got a new lease of life. But 'Biwi Ho To Aisi' is such a film, whose failure was sought by Salman Khan himself, who worked in it, but the film had completed 100 days of success at the box office.
Rekha got the title of Lady Amitabh
Rekha has done many such films with Jeetendra in her career, in which she is seen competing with other heroines for sindoor and mangalsutra. Rekha wearing saree in these films looks very beautiful. But, all these characters were characters created around a hero. The film 'Biwi Ho To Aisi' is a story of a daughter-in-law standing against domestic violence in a way, who does not desist from becoming a domineering figure for her family. She was the incarnation of the new daughter-in-law of the new era. In the film, Shalu, who wears Kanjeevaram sarees, touches her father-in-law's feet, worships Saraswati, tries to settle her brother-in-law's house, also shows her fierce form in a brilliant way. It is a matter of those days when Rekha was called 'Lady Amitabh'. And, the audience also liked her action avatar very much. However, she has also done a lot of comedy in this film.
Story of Bhandari family
The story of the film 'Biwi Ho To Aisi' is the story of the Bhandari family. Kamala is the mistress of the family and runs the family just like a mistress. Husband Kailash is a householder and all the proverbs prevalent in the Hindi heartland about marriage, fit 100% on him. The big sun of the house is eligible for marriage. Mother's wish is that a daughter of a family of her status should come home. Suraj falls in love with Shalu. Mother-in-law tortures this unwanted daughter-in-law. Makes a lot of conspiracies. But Shalu tries to win his heart by becoming the daughter-in-law of the house. She is the darling of her father-in-law. Brother-in-law Vicky also raises his voice in his favor. And, one day hundred days of mother-in-law end and one day of daughter-in-law begins. Kamla is shocked to learn that Shalu is not what she was seeing till now. It has been a part of a game. Which Kailash Bhandari played along with his friend Ashok Mehra.
This is how Salman got his first break
There were many more games during this film, but the first thing was that of Salman Khan, who later became a superstar of Hindi cinema. The selection of Salman Khan in this film is also a different story in itself. The entire setup of the film was prepared by its director JK Bihari. Rekha was signed. Farooq Sheikh was signed on as her husband. Kader Khan, Asrani and Bindu were also signed. Just could not find any young artist for the role of Rekha's brother-in-law. The director of the film Jai Kumar Bihari got very upset one day. He thought that whatever struggler would first come to his office asking for work, he would sign him. Coincidentally that day Salman knocked on his door. Salman reached there with the recommendation of KC Bokadia's production manager.
Salman's first heroine Renu Arya
Renu Arya has played the role of Salman's heroine in the film. You can see a rare picture of him during the shoot above here. There were a lot of discussions in those days about Renu Arya standing between Salman and Kader Khan. Some people used to say that she came in the film on the recommendation of KC Bokadia, while some people used to say that she was selected by Suresh Bhagat, the producer of the film. In the film 'Biwi Ho To Aisi', first Juhi Chawla was going to be Salman Khan's heroine. But, by the time she reached to sign the film, Renu Arya was finalized. Although Salman kept on thinking for a long time that Juhi Chawla had refused to act in front of an unknown boy. There was estrangement between the two regarding this. Renu Arya did not do any other film after this and soon after the release of the film, she got settled by working as an air hostess in an airlines.
First shot okay
The Muhurta of the film took place at Bhalla House in Bandra. Senior film journalist Inder Mohan Pannu, who was present on the occasion of Muhurta that day, says, 'I was interested in interviewing Renu Arya that day and I stayed there for the same. Then the director of the film JK Bihari introduced me to Salman saying that he is Salim Saab's son. Then I also felt like interviewing Salman. That day Salman Khan had a scene with Bindu in which he had to speak a line. When JK Bihari spoke action, Salman delivered his line perfectly in the first shot itself. The shot was okay in the first take itself. However, Salman could not believe it even after the director said OK. This was the period when Salman used to wander here and there in search of work. At the behest of Jackie Shroff, Salman also met director Shashilal Nair. And, it is said that then Shashilal Nair had told Salman that he can fearlessly take his name anywhere if needed.
Never recommended son
It is also worth noting here that famous writer Salim Khan never recommended his son Salman for work. Salman also got his first break in the film industry by asking for work himself and JK Bihari did not know till Salman was signed that he was Salim Khan's son. But, when he came to know, he went straight to Salim Khan with a complaint about Salman Khan. Salman was like the rest of the youth then. A little cocky and a little temperamental. Then Shashilal Nair went and handled the matter and Salim Khan also gave a tough class to Salman.
Daughter-in-law of new attitude in new era
The film 'Biwi Ho To Aisi' is an important film of its period in the sense that it showed the daughter-in-law of the house as an obedient, gentle and considerate woman, but people saw the changing form of this daughter-in-law. When the tyranny of the mother-in-law goes beyond limits. The film also takes a social initiative in the sense that a daughter-in-law's relationship with all the members of the household serves to unite the family as well as take the family forward. The film has an interesting character graph of Rekha in which her character goes from bubbly village girl to a decent daughter-in-law to a foreign-educated girl. Farooq Shaikh has played the character of Shalu's husband with ease. After Farooq Sheikh and Rekha's film 'Umrao Jaan', the pair was reunited in this film. With Salman Khan, Rekha did not work in any other film after this film. The special appearance of both of them can definitely be seen in the film 'Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se'.
