During the making of a documentary on cinema's finest star Amitabh Bachchan for Zee Network, interviews were done with all the stalwarts associated with him. Prakash Mehra was alive then and during the conversation with him the story of the film 'Zanjeer' came out. He told, the shooting of the film was going on in RK's studio those days. Raj Kapoor was doing some work nearby. When he heard Amitabh Bachchan's voice on the shooting, he sent an invitation to meet Prakash Mehra. When Prakash Mehra came out, met him, according to Prakash Mehra himself, Raj Kapoor said, 'It has a lot of power in its voice. See, this boy will become a superstar one day.' The film 'Zanjeer' broke the chain of flops for Amitabh Bachchan as a solo hero and he became the first angry young man of Hindi cinema. But, the making of the film 'Zanjeer', Amitabh Bachchan becoming the hero in it, Jaya coming forward when no heroine was ready for the film and then Pran's excellent performance in the film, all this in itself is no less than a film story. Is. Let us tell you the biscope of the film 'Zanjeer' which has completed 50 years of its release.
Amitabh Bachchan's 12 films had flopped before its release on May 11, 1973, and among these films, films like 'Bombay to Goa' and 'Anand' became the straw for him. The story of the film 'Zanjeer' reached actor Dharmendra through its writers Salim-Javed and Dharmendra also bought it. Dharmendra had decided to do this film with Mumtaz with director Prakash Mehra. Dharmendra and Prakash Mehra became friends with the film 'Samadhi'. In this film, Prakash Mehra took Asha Parekh and Jaya Bhaduri along with Dharmendra. Dharmendra was doing films in three shifts those days and wanted to start shooting for 'Zanjeer' after a little pause. The problem before Prakash Mehra was that his previous film 'Aan Baan' with Sunil Dutt and Rakhee did not do well and he had to somehow shoot and release 'Zanjeer' within six months so that his career would not slow down. Dharmendra was not ready for this.
When 'Zanjeer' was stuck for a long time, Prakash Mehra reached Dharmendra's house one day in full swing and started talking about other things. Dharmendra saw that if the friendship did not go out of hand in the affair of the film, then he bought the script of the film 'Zanjeer' with his own money and gave it to Prakash Mehra and also gave him the freedom to make this film with any other actor if he wanted. Can After this, the film fell in Amitabh Bachchan's lap after circling from Dev Anand to Rajkumar and Dilip Kumar. Dev Anand wanted four to five songs on himself in the film. Rajkumar wanted the film to be shot in Madras. Dilip Kumar did not get the character of the hero of the film. Apart from Dharmendra, Mumtaz, the third artist who was signed in the film 'Zanjeer' was Pran. It was Pran who advised Prakash Mehra to watch the fight scene in the film 'Bombay to Goa' released at the same time, in which Amitabh beats up Shatrughan Sinha while chewing gum. Prakash Mehra saw the film. Amitabh Bachchan liked him.
Here Prakash Mehra signed Amitabh Bachchan for the film 'Zanjeer'. Meanwhile, Mumtaz left the film saying that she was planning to get married and could not give dates for the shoot. However, she left the film after seeing the fate of her other film, Bandhe Haath with Amitabh Bachchan. Then Jaya Bhaduri's entry took place in the film. From the film 'Zanjeer', Amitabh's name was called Angry Young Man in the newspapers. He didn't speak to anyone. Neither smiled nor resembled much. Having lost his parents at the hands of a criminal wearing a horse bracelet on one hand on the night of Diwali, Vijay suffocates psychologically since childhood. When he grows up and does a police job, he doesn't listen to more than three or five. When he gets into trouble with Sher Khan, who runs a gambling den, he taunts the man in uniform. Then Vijay comes to Sher Khan's area in plain clothes and this fight again turns into friendship. The twist in the story comes when Amitabh Bachchan gets suspended on bribery charges.
Famous actor Ajit played the role of Teja in the film 'Zanjeer'. His real name was Hamid Ali Khan. His father used to work at the Nizam of Hyderabad. When Ajit became the villain for this film, he asked Prakash Mehra if he had ever met the real life mafia don. Ajit told them that these big dons of real life never shout or shout. His cold tone only works. And, similarly, Salim Khan also knew the address of a don of Indore. Salim and Ajit both met him. Before the shooting of the film started, Ajith spent a long time with this don and learned his ways. Pran, who plays Sher Khan in the film, also did a lot of preparation for the film. The getup he wears in the film is his own preparation. Pran never repeated the getup of one of his films in any other film. If the look was the same, he would change the quote. Pran also had the biggest contribution in making the film Zanjeer. Even after Dharmendra and Mumtaz left the film, Pran did not leave Prakash Mehra's side. This is despite the fact that after leaving this film, Manoj Kumar also lured him to give two films.
Actor Pran has been known as a man of the tongue. But, during the shooting of the song 'Yaari Hai Imaan Mera, Yaar Mera Zindagi...' for the film 'Zanjeer', he got so angry that he left the shoot midway and went home. Later, with great difficulty, he agreed to do this song, Amitabh Bachchan smiles on screen for a while during this song throughout the film. This song sung by Manna Dey in the film and the song 'Deewane Hai Deewano Ko Na Ghar Chahiye' sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi were superhits. In this song, the lyricist Gulshan Bawra himself is dancing while playing the harmonium. There are total five songs in the movie Zanjeer. Three of these songs were super duper hits. The fourth song 'Diljalon Ka Dil Jala Ke', which was written by the film's director Prakash Mehra, also played a lot. Kalyanji Anandji gave music in the film Zanjeer.
Amitabh Bachchan also received a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actor for the film 'Zanjeer' but the award went to Rishi Kapoor that year for the film 'Bobby'. He himself has disclosed in his autobiography how he got this award. Amitabh Bachchan received this year's Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for the film 'Namak Haraam'.
The film 'Zanjeer' is considered to be the trend setter film of Hindi cinema. This film was made in that era when the hero was only seen doing love on screen. Even when he used to fight against the corruption, unemployment and anarchy happening in the society around him, he used to come back to his beloved in between. Here it has nothing to do with the rest of the world. Vijay Khanna confronts the world by going to the extent of breaking his house. An empty bottle in the hands of an elderly man and the death of his three sons from poisoned alcohol do not allow him to live in peace. This effort to connect the film with the reality of the society is the real secret of the success of the film 'Zanjeer'.
There are some secrets of the film 'Zanjeer' which even Amitabh Bachchan came to know much later. When the film premiered in Kolkata, the crowd gathered there was cheering for Pran. The film's distributors had promoted it as Pran's film. Seeing this, Amitabh's eyes became moist. Prakash Mehra then pressed Amitabh's shoulder and said, 'Let the picture finish. These people will be seen raising your slogans in a short while.
The film was released on 11 May 1973. Amitabh and Jaya wanted to go abroad to celebrate its success. Both got the approval of the family members for this but the condition was that first both would get married and then go abroad together. So on June 3, 1973, both of them got married and then both of them celebrated the film 'Zanjeer'.
