Amitabh Bachchan's 12 films had flopped before its release on May 11, 1973, and among these films, films like 'Bombay to Goa' and 'Anand' became the straw for him. The story of the film 'Zanjeer' reached actor Dharmendra through its writers Salim-Javed and Dharmendra also bought it. Dharmendra had decided to do this film with Mumtaz with director Prakash Mehra. Dharmendra and Prakash Mehra became friends with the film 'Samadhi'. In this film, Prakash Mehra took Asha Parekh and Jaya Bhaduri along with Dharmendra. Dharmendra was doing films in three shifts those days and wanted to start shooting for 'Zanjeer' after a little pause. The problem before Prakash Mehra was that his previous film 'Aan Baan' with Sunil Dutt and Rakhee did not do well and he had to somehow shoot and release 'Zanjeer' within six months so that his career would not slow down. Dharmendra was not ready for this.

When 'Zanjeer' was stuck for a long time, Prakash Mehra reached Dharmendra's house one day in full swing and started talking about other things. Dharmendra saw that if the friendship did not go out of hand in the affair of the film, then he bought the script of the film 'Zanjeer' with his own money and gave it to Prakash Mehra and also gave him the freedom to make this film with any other actor if he wanted. Can After this, the film fell in Amitabh Bachchan's lap after circling from Dev Anand to Rajkumar and Dilip Kumar. Dev Anand wanted four to five songs on himself in the film. Famous actor Ajit played the role of Teja in the film 'Zanjeer'. His real name was Hamid Ali Khan. His father used to work at the Nizam of Hyderabad. When Ajit became the villain for this film, he asked Prakash Mehra if he had ever met the real life mafia don. Ajit told them that these big dons of real life never shout or shout. Amitabh Bachchan also received a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actor for the film 'Zanjeer' but the award went to Rishi Kapoor that year for the film 'Bobby'.
