Aanand L Rai’s directorial Atrangi Re went on floors in March 2020 and had to put a halt to the shoot due to the covid breakout. The team then resumed shoot in October in Madurai and then Delhi. The film will bring together a unique cast of Akshay Kumar, Sara Ali Khan and Dhanush for the first time together. While the Maharashtra government has decided to open cinema halls from 22nd October 2021, it comes as a huge surprise that the film has opted for a digital release on Netflix. With big budget films already having booked the major dates for their releases, Atrangi Re not being a big ticket film, has decided to have a digital release.

With Atrangi Re, it will be Akshay Kumar’s second film digitally released after Laxmii, second for Sara after Coolie No.1 and also for Dhanush after his film Jagame Thandhiram. The film is produced by Bhushan Kumar's T-Series, Colour Yellow Productions, as well as Cape of Good Films. It is written by Himanshu Sharma. Aanand and Akshay have collaborated on another film titled Raksha Bandhan which will have a theatrical release on 11th August 2022. Akshay will also be seen in Sooryavanshi and Bachchan Pandey while Sara Ali Khan will be seen in The Immortal Ashwatthama.
