One of the most anticipated documentaries of this season 'The Roshans' is all set to release on Netflix on 17th January 2025, which was announced at a grand trailer launch event in Mumbai on Thursday. Present at the launch were Superstar Hrithik Roshan with his father Rakesh Roshan, and uncle Rajesh Roshan, along with Monika Shergill President of Content Netflix and Director Shashi Ranjan.
Throwing light on what makes the documentary 'The Roshans' special, Monika Shergill President of Content Netflix threw light on, says, 'The documentary is a story of the dreams determination and unbreakable bond of the Roshan family which bestows upon the Indian film industry. The Roshans is the testament to the three generations of the Roshan family including Shri Roshan Lal Nagar, his sons Rajesh Roshan, Rakesh Roshan and his son Hrithik Roshan for their unwavering commitment to excellence in the entertainment industry.'
She adds, "For the very first time the stories of their trials, their triumphs and the deep love for cinema, that has run through their family's legacy will unfold in this documentary straight by the Roshans taking the audiences down the memory lane talking about their trials and triumphs. I am also thankful to Shashi Ranjan who has been a great partner and a Director of this docu-series for it's depth and nuances that he has brought to this project.'
Shashi Ranjan, talking about the concept behind the documentary said," It doesn't only tell a story about the people, but also about Indian cinema. Unfortunately, there is hardly any audio-visual documentation about any legends of Indian cinema right from K Asif, Mehboob, Guru Dutt, Rajesh Khanna, Devanand, Dilip Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar Mohamed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and we don't have any audio-visual documentation of their lives. I think Indian cinema will always be indebted to Netflix for telling this story on their platform and many more stories must come in front of the audiences who have lived with their films, their music and their stories."
The documentary trailer began with Hrithik Roshan putting a cassette in an old tape recorder belonging to his grandfather telling that there is a very interesting story about how their surname changed from Nagrath to Roshans. While, legendary singer Asha Bhosle says there are very few families where all kinds of artists are born, but it has happened in the Roshan family.
The trailer gave a glimpse of some interesting trivia about the Roshans and their creative legacy coming from legends like Asha Bhosle, Javed Akhtar, Prem Chopra, Salim Suleman, Sonu Nigam and Many More.
Shedding light on what the documentary means to him and had he met his grandfather, what would have been the conversation with him, Hrithik Roshan says," When I saw the documentary I was absolutely amazed and it's directed so beautifully. I never met my grandfather and I wonder if I would have asked him about his childhood and I wonder what he would have asked me?... I think he would have asked me if I was happy and I would have thanked him because I often wonder, what was it that was driving me when I did my first film?... what was it and where did it come from?...and the simplest answer is that it was something that was passed on to me."
He added, " When my father said that he wanted this documentary I felt uncomfortable as I don't like attention, but then I realised it's not about me, it's about the history of my ancestors, my grandfather my father and my uncle and their stories, that made me unstoppable. The true celebration of this documentary will be if it will inspire others especially students of cinema and many human beings."
Rakesh Roshan, answering the same question, what would have made his father most proud of, said, 'I think we took his name ahead and it is that what he would have loved and we did that. He inspired us with his work and we gave our work for so many years as our contribution to the industry."
Shashi Ranjan shared an interesting trivia about the conception of the idea, " We were at Rakeshji's farmhouse in Khandala and I started singing Roshan Saheb's old songs, and so he said you sing so many songs of my father. I told him I had sung these songs since my childhood and then he said he was a great musician and an unsung hero of the industry. I told him he was such a legend we must do something. So, I gave him the reference of my program Making of the Living Legends, and I suggested making a documentary on Roshan Saheb."
He adds," The next day Rakeshji called me and said if along with Dad we also talk about him and his legacy. But I realised what Javed Saheb said in the documentary later, that the traditional values that Roshan Saheb left are still prevalent in this family, as the kind of dedication I see in Hrithik, the unique thing in their family is that they don't speak about their work, their work speaks for itself and so this arc starts from the grandfather to the grandson who today is a superstar!"
How different was making a documentary Ranjan says, 'Documentary making unlike fiction is not scripted and is a lot of spontaneously done and there is so much research and talk with people which gives new dimensions to it. There were so many things I discovered about Rakeshji which he spoke about in a candid conversation which is unique, and it will have everyone's heart once they watch it.'
Music Director Rajesh Roshan was initially shy about sharing his life story and said, 'When Duggu ( Rakesh Roshan ) told me to make the documentary, I told him what's the need as I did not want to show my life which is a very simple life, with a difficult journey that I travelled, But he just said we have to do it, so I agreed'
The documentary 'The Roshans' is indeed a story of the dreams determination and unbreakable bond of the Roshan family bestowed upon the Indian film industry. Releasing on Netflix on 17th January 2025.
especial because we are actually bringing a piece of Indian cinema history about a family that has served the industry with its creativity and their generous with their passion across crafts from music direction, film making and acting for three generations.
The Rishan legacy began with the remarkable Shri Roshan Lal Nagar, the grandfather of Hrithik Roshan, a composer who defined an era and left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. Some of his greatest songs which are still popular from my childhood alley 'Are Rah Na Rahe Hum', 'Jo Wada Kiya Wo Nibhana Padega', Laga Chunri Main Daag and so many more melodies.
