Well known Bollywood actor and politician Raj Babbar’s niece Kajri Babbar, is all set to bring forth a Punjabi movie based on an incredible Sikh woman who cemented her name in history. The film titled Kaur will give us an insight into women's suffrage in UK and women's emancipation in the contemporary era. Kajri is hoping that Kaur will be the first project under the co-production agreement between UK and India in 2008.
Speaking on the above, Kajri said, “Despite the treaty, no film was made as a collaboration and there are only British films casting Indian actors.” Speaking about bringing the story of Sophia on screen she said, “I realised then that today if I have the right to vote it's because of a Sikh woman, Sophia Duleep Singh.” She added, “We have been working on the script for two years, also courtesy the pandemic. Through this story of two Sikh women who lived in the UK a century apart, you get to know that women's movement often is attributed to a woman in the West, while actually it was a Sikh woman who helmed it.”
Kajri has cast Sikh women for the roles of Sophia and Mehek to keep the film authentic and said, “If you think about it, things haven't changed for women despite the difference of a century between Sophia and Mehak, a dialogue that the film raises with the audiences.”Rameet Rauli will play one of the leads in the film. She is the daughter of one of the band members of Heera Band from UK. She added, “My effort, along with that of my filmmaker and activist friend Hasiba B Amin, who is from the India side of the film's production, are to employ as many women as possible in all roles and responsibilities in the film's making.” Kajri Babbar has also given a small role in the film to her uncle Raj Babar which she will not be disclosing about at the moment. She concluded, “Not many opportunities have been given to women in filmmaking in western countries and to top that we are brown women making films!”
