Known to be one of the most sensible filmmakers of our time, Sumitra Bhave passed away at the age of 78. The writer-director was battling age related ailments and under supervision in a private hospital in Pune for a long time. Her death has brought upon a void in Marathi cinema that cannot be filled. Some of her notable work includes Kaasav, Samhita, Astu, Welcome Home, Vaastupurush, Dahavi Fa, Devrai and many more. She made socially relevant films that dealt with issues like discrimination and mental health issues. 


Sumitra’s last collaboration won her the Swarna Kamal at the National Awards. She has also been the narrator to Chaitanya Tamhane's upcoming film The Disciple. Her demise is a huge loss to Marathi cinema.
