Actress Somy Ali, once a significant figure in Bollywood, currently manages a US-based NGO named No More Tears. She has witnessed both success and failure throughout her journey. According to her, fame has its drawbacks, but it also comes with numerous advantages.
"Everyone desires fame. If someone claims they're pursuing it solely for the art, they're lying. Being famous brings many advantages, and one can evade consequences for various things, even serious crimes like murder. I'm not exaggerating; just look at O.J. Simpson and others. Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby committed terrible acts against women for years and faced no consequences. I can't fathom what might be happening in the Hindi film industry, knowing there are no repercussions for those with fame, which translates to power and often leads to its abuse," she explains.
Loneliness is another aspect that accompanies success, she notes. She adds, "I also believe that many of these stars feel quite lonely at the top. That's why they maintain relationships with those who were their friends before fame struck. I have personally seen old friends taking advantage of stars once they become suddenly famous. It's a catch-22 situation with no way out. Essentially, you are selling your soul to the devil, and many do it without remorse, while some regret it in the long run. I have mostly observed stars being content with the perks, the money, the attention, and the constant curiosity that the average person has about their lives."
"People often think that the struggle lessens once you become a successful star, but that's not true," she explains. "Assuming that achieving stardom is easy is the most naive thought one can have when entering the industry. Those who do face severe psychological hardships. It's like rolling the dice of luck and fate in this field, and if both aren't on your side, you might find yourself in eternal doomsville," she warns.
Somy Ali goes on to say, "There are many examples of individuals who have sustained success through a combination of luck and immense hard work, such as Aamir, Shah Rukh, and Akshay. On the other hand, there are those who have become huge stars, enjoying the best aspects of stardom despite having no acting skills. I've witnessed these actors during my time in the industry, and they continue to dominate, consistently lacking in talent."
Discussing success, she expresses, "For me, success is about making others happy. I always say there's no altruism in selflessness because it brings happiness to the individual. Therefore, I'm not doing anyone favours; instead, helping others and advocating for justice, both for others and myself, is the life I've chosen. It brings me immense happiness."
