Imperial College of Engineering has three new students Farhan, played by R. Madhavan, Raju, played by Sharman Joshi and Ranchoddas aka Rancho played by Aamir Khan. Farhan and RAju end up getting ragged by the seniors while Rancho
Escapes by using his wit and intelligence. From the very first day Rancho is at loggerheads with the college principal Viru Sahastrabuddhe, who the students call virus. He is a brilliant student and very intelligent but gets thrown out of class every now and then for his innumerable questions and antics.
Farhan, Raju and Racho become close friends and spend lots of time together, even making fun of a over smart student Chatur who wants to be top in everything. One day a student Joy Lobo commits suicide because he didn’t finish his final project in time and is not allowed to graduate by Virus. Rancho confronts Virus and tells him that the education system is so weak and it is choking the students but it doesn’t bother him.
During a party, the three friends get drunk and urinate on the front door of Virus. He spots Farhan and Raju but Rancho escapes. Next day he calls in Raju and tells him that he has to write a letter accusing Rancho for the break in, into his house or he will be expelled. In serious dilemma Raju jumps off his office window but ends up in a coma. After recovering all the friends get their dream jobs. Meanwhile Racho who is actually the servant’s son on the real Ranchoddas Chanchad has become a scientist. The friends find him in a remote village and Pia and Rancho fall in love.
The movie is directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The music is composed by Shantanu Moitra.
