Arun, played by Aamir Khan, is a successful artist. He moves into a shabby little apartment in Mumbai where he likes to spend time alone with his thoughts and paint all day. He meets Shai, played by Monica Dogra at an exhibition and he invites her over to her apartment where they have a one-night stand. Next morning however, he ends the relationship and she walks out angry.
Arun moves into a new apartment and he gets the good news that his paintings will be showcased at an exhibition center in Sydney. There he also plans to meet his ex-wife and his child. While unpacking he finds a box left by the previous tenant of the apartment that contains a silver chain, ring and three tapes, which are a video diary. Munna, played by Prateik Babbar is a local dhobi and aspires to be a Bollywood hero. He delivers laundry at Shai’s house and they soon become friends. She loves photography and promises to shoot his portfolio to get him into the film industry. Meanwhile Arun watches the tapes left in his apartment by a woman called Yasmin and learns more about her.
Shai gets Arun’s new address from Munna and shoots his pictures without his knowledge. Munna meanwhile starts to have feeling for her but is unable to tell her. His brother is a crook but he promises to use his underworld connection to get him into the film industry. Later Arun watches Yasmin’s last video and realizes she may have committed suicide in the very apartment he is staying and he leaves and moves into another place. The movie is written and directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan, Dhillin Mehta and Tshephel Namgyal. The music is composed by Gustavo Santaolalla.
