A love story of Dr. Amarnath Gill (essayed by Sanjeev Kumar) who falls in love with a Pahadi girl Chandra (Sharmila Tagore), daughter of a local Ayurveda healer Harihar Thapa in Darjeeling. They spend some time together and promise to love each other for a life time. Dr. Gill has to return to Calcutta (Now Kolkata) to give his medical exams and promises to return and marry her. However, he does not keep his promise. Twenty-Five Years later he comes back in search of Chanda and her father, and learns that her father has passed away and Chanda was married off to a crippled old man through whom she gave birth to a daughter and that Chanda had passed away after turning insane.
He finds Kajli (Sharmila Tagore) who is Chanda’s daughter and is a replica of her mother. Kajli has been molested by her relative and has ended up in a brothel. Dr. Amarnath takes on himself to reform her and buys her off from the brothel to give her a good life and change her to a refined woman and thus make up for what he did to her mother. Kajli is unaware of his relationship with her mother and secretly starts loving him for he treats her with respect, love and care. Moulds her to giving up her bad habits and reforming her to a new woman. Will she forgive him if she knows he is also indirectly responsible for her mother to turn insane and lead a sad life with a crippled husband.?
