Mohit was born in a Kashmiri Pandit family and raised in Jammu and moved to Mumbai to begin a career in modelling. He had lost 29 kg to participate in the Grasim Mister India for the modelling contest and topped as the first five contestants.
Mohit was educated at Jammu Kendriya Vidyalay and graduated as B. Com Graduate from University of Jammu.
Mohit’s career started from the year 2005 when he acted in the television show Antariksh based on the science fiction.
In 2008 he starred in a comedy film Don Muthu Swami in which he plays the role of Jaikishan. The film did not do well so he had to return back to the small screen.
In 2009, he appeared for the television serial Chehra , a suspense drama series that revolved around a handicapped girl. Mohit Raina plays the role of her husband Gary, a young business tycoon and his role got him noticed. He later played a role in Bandini another television serial.
He starred in the film Ganga Ki Dheej in 2010 which was a flop film.
In 2011 Mohit was cast as the lead actor in Nikhil Sinha’s Devon Ke Dev Mahadev. For this role he started improving his physic as it’s the journey of Lord Shiva that he portrayed. Which shows him as a hermit to a householder and his marriage to Goddess Sati and later to Goddess Parvati. He had to learn Indian classical dance form Kathak that became the integral part of the role as Lord Shiva. He was much loved actor after this series that got him famous as Lord Shiva. The serial came to an end in 2014.
Mohit later played the emperor Ashoka in the historical television serial once again called the Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat which appeared on Colours TV. The series was broadcasted in 2016 . He also played lead roles as Havildar ishar Singh in 21 Sarforash- Saragarhi and 1897 which was based on Battle of Saragarhi.
Mohit was seen promoting Kaafir with Dia Mirza in 2019 a web series of ZEE5 in which he starred opposite Dia Mirza .
and had a noticeable role as Major Karan Kashyap in the film Uri:The Surgical Strike which was released in January 2019 , a film with the highest grossing film in India.
