Rohan, played by Varun Dhawan is the most popular student in college. He is the son of wealthy businessman Ashok Nanda, played by Ram Kapoor, who has no time for him. Rohan is in love with the prettiest and most popular girl in college Shanaya, played by Alia Bhatt, who is a neglected child and fed up of her mother’s antics of divorcing and remarrying rich men. A new student Abhimanyu Singh, played by Sidharth Malhotra enters collge. He is dashing and good looking and thus becomes the new heartthrob.

He befriends Rohan and Alia after a couple of altercations and misunderstandings between them. Eventually Shanaya and Abi start getting close and eventually fall in love. But Rohan is not happy with this. At the college competition which will choose the Best Student of the Year, all the students work hard and study day and night. First round is a quiz, second is a treasure hunt, third round is a prom and the last round is triathlon. Ultimately Abhimanyu lets Rohan win seeing Ashok wanting Rohan to lose. Rohan however, refuses to take the award.

The entire movie is a flashback told by all the students reminiscing their days with their ailing principal Dean Yogendra, played by Rishi Kapoor, who is in the hospital. The movie is directed by Karan Johar and produced by Hiroo Yash Johar and Gauri Khan. The music is composed by Vishal-Shekhar.
