Tommy, played by Shahid Kapoor is a successful Punjabi musician who lives a lavish lifestyle. His songs are mostly based on violence and addictions. His crew includes Tayaji, and his cousin Jassi. Tommy is a hard-core cocaine addict and loves to smoke and drink. At one of his house parties while snorting drugs, police raid the place and arrest him. Meeting two inmates at the jail he realizes how much his songs have affected the youth, when they share stories of their robberies inspired by his songs. He decides to become a better person.
Mean while Bauria, palyed by Alia Bhatt is a Bihari migrant who comes to work as a laborer in Punjab. There she comes across a racket of drug peddling in the fields and gets hold of one packet. She unfortunately runs into the drug peddlers gangs and they abduct her when she gets rid of the packet. They keep her locked in a house and physically and sexually abuse her. She manages to escape one day.
In another place in Punjab, Sartaj, played by Diljit Dosanj is a police officer, who is upset about the drug smuggling his seniors are consenting. He decides to take matters in his own hands when his own brother, Balli falls victim to drug addiction and is brought to the hospital where Preet, played by Kareena Kapoor works as an activist. Sartaj and Preet decide to crack down on the drug problem. They make a report on all the corrupt officials and drug peddlers.
Tommy after bing released from Jail goes to his concert and talks about reformation which confuses and infuriates the youth at the concert and they hull abuses and shoes at him. Angered by their behavior he urinates on the crowd and flees. He runs into an isolated structure where he meets Bauria and they start talking. He falls in love with her but by then the police come looking for Tommy and Bauria gets captured by the drug smugglers gang.
Sartaj’s brother kills Preet accidentally while trying to escape and the police who come to investigate the crime find the report she and Sartaj made. They hide Balli and question Sartaj. Meanwhile Tommy rescues Bauria and Balli apologizes to Sartaj.
