According to reports, Jeevan was born on 24 October 1915 in Srinagar. Jeevan's real name was Omkar Nath Dhar. He wanted to become an actor since childhood. Jeevan's family was quite large. He had 24 siblings. His mother had passed away with the birth of Jeevan. Jeevan lost his father when he was three years old. Acting was not allowed in Jeevan's family. That's why he left his home at the age of 18 and came to Mumbai. When he came to Mumbai, he had only 26 rupees in his pocket. Coming to Mumbai, Jeevan had to struggle a lot in the initial days. He needed a job so, he started working in a studio. This studio belonged to Mohanlal Sinha. Mohan Lal used to be a well-known director of that time. When Mohanlal came to know that Jeevan wanted to act, he gave him a role in his film 'Fashionable India'.

Jeevan knew early in his career that his face was not worthy of a hero. So he tried his hand at villainy and was successful. Jeevan's successful films include memorable films like 'Afsana', 'Station Master', 'Amar Akbar Anthony' and 'Dharam-Veer'. He also played important roles in films like Naagin, Shabnam, Heer-Ranjha, Johny Mera Naam, Kanoon, Suraksha, Lavaris, etc. The record of playing the same character in films is recorded in the name of Jeevan. He played the role of Narad Muni in 61 films. He did these roles in films of different languages.

Jeevan proved his acting talent by becoming a murderer, sometimes a rapist and a goon. He played these characters in such a way that people really hated him! There is a story about them. Jeevan had gone out of Mumbai for an event. When he got down from the train, there was a crowd to welcome him, but suddenly a sandal fell on his face.
