The film happens to be the first Indian film to be screened after the normalisation of ties between India and China, following last month’s agreement to resolve the standoff in Eastern Ladakh.

Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, is set to be released in China on November 29, 2024. The film stars Vijay Sethupathi in the titular role, alongside Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Natarajan Subramaniam, Abhirami Gopikumar, Divyabharathi, Singampuli, Aruldoss, Munishkanth, Sachana Namidass, Manikandan and Bharathiraja.

The suspense film Maharaja has already begun pre-screenings and its release in China coincides with two major competitors - Hollywood's Gladiator II and the local film Her Story. The film is one of the highest-rated Indian films in recent years and currently holds a high rating of 8.7/10 on the Chinese movie review site Douban.
