Suraiya, a famous actress of her time, was born on 15 June 1929 in Lahore. Her full name was Suraiya Jamal Shaikh. When she was one year old, her family shifted to Mumbai and the actress did her early education in Mumbai. When the actress stepped into the world of acting, she created a stir. Suraiya made her acting debut as a child artist in her childhood. The film ‘Madam Fashion‘ came in 1936. The film was directed by Jaddanbai Hussain. The film ‘Ishara‘ in the year 1943 made her a film star overnight. In this film, Suraiya got an opportunity to work as a lead heroine with actor Prithviraj Kapoor.

Suraiya’s acting and singing
Both Suraiya’s acting and singing were much discussed in the Bollywood corridors and on the other hand her killer beauty, which people used to wait for hours to see. There used to be a line of his fans outside his house ‘Krishna Mahal’ near Marine Drive in Mumbai. When there was a dispute between Suraiya and Dilip
She did films with almost every big star. Many stars wanted to work in films with Suraiya. One of them was Dilip Kumar, who fell in love with Suraiya after seeing her beauty and wanted to do films with her. Dilip also got a chance to work in the film with Suraiya, but due to one of his actions, everything went wrong. The film was never completed and neither did they appear together for any other film.

Actually, Dilip Kumar asked his friend director K Asif to make a film with both of them. Then, K Asif announced the film titled ‘Jaanwar’ featuring Suraiya and Dilip. Shooting started. There was a scene in the film where Suraiya gets bitten by a snake on her leg and Dilip has to extract the snake’s venom by sucking on her feet. This scene was shot perfectly in the first shot, yet this scene was shot continuously for four to five days. One day Suraiya understood that Dilip’s intention is not right and the director is also with him in this. The next day when the shooting of this scene started again, Suraiya pulled her leg and abused Dilip and angrily left the set. Then, that film got shelved. After this Suraiya worked with many big stars, but did not do a single film with Dilip Kumar.
