Dia Mirza is one of Bollywood’s key finds of the 2000 era. She has been the poster girl of the traditional Indian cultured girl in mainstream Hindi cinema in the last decade and she has invariably made a name for herself in the industry. Dia Mirza is an active figure in the social service arena and has been the strong pillar of many socially committed programmes and groups and has been an active social worker.
Dia Mirza was born to a German Christian artist father Frank Handrich and a Bengali Interior designer cum social worker mother DeepaHandrich in Hyderabad. After her parents’ divorce at a later stage, she picked up the surname Mirza with her mother going on to marry Ahmed Mirza. She did her schooling from Vidyaranya High School and Nasr School both in Hyderabad after which she enrolled for her Bachelor of Arts degree from Ambedkar Open University in Hyderabad. During her college days she worked part time as marketing executive for a media firm “ Neeraj Multi Media Studio” and at the same time also tried her luck at modelling for many well-known brands and then went on to win the Miss Asia Pacific Title in the year 2000 which subsequently led to her acting debut in the year 2001.
Dia Mirza got married to her business partner Sahil Sangha in the year 2014 after working together on her home production films as co- producers.
Film debut and rise to prominence ( 2001-2003) Dia Mirza was signed in to make her Hindi film acting debut with the remake romantic drama Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein helmed by Gautam Menon which had her opposite R Madhavan and Saif Ali Khan in the front lead. The movie which narrated the intricacies of a web of romantic encounters between three main characters had her in a worthwhile part playing the famous heroine in question like in past romcom’s. However the widespread popularity of the movie in the ensuing years even after failing to leave a mark at the time of its release served her well by launching her career in Bollywood with a string of prestigious Awards coming her way the year. The same year in 2001 she went on to be cast opposite Arjun Rampal in the lead for romantic drama flick Deewaanapan, Following years 2002 and 2003 she was seen in the Salman Khan starrer action thriller Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge, Shabana Azmi’s Tehzeeb and the ensemble comic drama film Praan Jaye Par Shaan Na Jaye. These movies could not contribute in whatsoever significant ways to her acting career but nonetheless kept her a recurring face of Bollywood. String of other lead roles (2003-2007) However Dia resurfaced in the year 2003 with the Vivek Oberoi starrer action film Dum, which saw her playing a subdued part and she was able to rise above the clichéd heroine part with a sort of charm which added to the critical acclaim of the flick. Anurag Basu roped her in for his hugely underperforming romantic emotional drama outing Tumse Nahin Dekha in the latter part of 2004 and the she was seen opposite Emraan Hashmi. She followed up by making special appearances in movies like Kyun ! Ho Gaya Na, Naam Gum Jaayega and Blackmail in the year 2004 a rather uneventful stint of her career at that point. Dia Mirza retuned to limelight with mostly supporting roles in movies like Vidhu Vinod Chopra production’s epic musical romance drama film Parineeta consisting of Vidya Balan and Saif Ali Khan in the lead, Anubav Sinha’s star-studded spy thriller Dus featuring Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty and Abhishek Bachchan and others and meanwhile also donned lead roles in movies like Koi Mere Dil Mein Hai and Alag .
