Arshad Warsi is one of the most sought after actors of Hindi cinema. He has been often cited as one of the best actors in Bollywood over the years by many celebrities like Naseeruddin Shah, Bhawana Somaaya, Vidya Balan and Boman Irani. Warsi has shone in lead roles in movies like Ishqiya, Sehar, Jolly LLB and equally in comic avatars in movies like Munna Bhai Film Series, Golmaal Series, Hulchul, Dhamaal and many more. He has proved his versatility in a wide range of character and is truly an underrated star of Bollywood.
Arshad Warsi was born to a Muslim family in Mumbai. He lost his parents after completing his schooling from Banes Boarding School in Mumbai. Due to much financial constraints, he was forced to stop studies in his tenth grade and subsequently went on to work as a sales man and a Photo Lab Assistant at the time. He further went on to pursue his passion in dancing from Akbar Sami’s Dance group and after serving as the assistant director in two Hindi projects he formed his own Dance School after winning the Indian Dance Competition in the year 1991 and afterwards choreographed the title track for the film Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja in 1993. He was called up by actress Jaya Bachchan for making his official film lead debut through Amitabh Bachchan’s production Tere Mere Sapne in 1996.
Arshad Warsi met his wife Maria Goretti as she joined his dance group “Awesome” from where she went on to be a VJ and actress. The couple eventually got married in the year 1999.
Film debut and rise to prominence ( 1993-1995) Arshad Warsi was called upon by Jaya Bachchan for making his film debut in Amitabh Bachchan’s home production debut film Tere Mere Sapne which had Chandrachur Singh , Priya Gill , Simran and Arshad Warshi in the fore front cast. The romantic flick saw him doing his part well and the phenomenal critical and commercial run of the movie made him a face to look out for overnight. Arshad then went on to be part of movies like Betaabi and Mere Do Anmol Ratan which were baby steps in his film career which made him noted among the Hindi film audiences. He was then cast as the male lead in moderately successful movies like Hero Hindustani and Trishakti but had fetched extra ordinary acclaim for his performance in P Vasu’s Higi Pyar Ki Jeet alongside Ajay Devgn in the lead. Array of unsuccessful movies (2001-2002) Arshad Warsi was seen next alongside Manoj Bajpayee and Tabu in the critically recognized crime drama Ghaath which failed to make a mark at the box office. Then he starred alongside Naseeruddin Shah and Rekha in the black comedy outing Mujhe Meri Biwi Se Bachaao , Rajkumar Kohli’s ensemble supernatural thriller which boast of a star cast consisting of Jaani Dushman but could not make any waves at the time. Arshad Warsi continued to deliver standout performance in all of these movies despite their failure to make a mark and carried his lean patch with Shashanka Ghosh’s Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part 2, but Warsi had proved his mettle by garnering extra ordinary reviews for his part. Major turnaround and subsequent films ( 2003-2006) However Arshad Warsi ended his lean patch in the year when Rajkumar Hirani after many casting choices bagged him for playing the iconic second fiddle character called” Circuit” along with Sanjay Dutt in the title role. The blockbuster comic drama flick which narrated the story of a goon who aspires to be a doctor after a major turn of events had Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi coming up with a performance of their lifetimes and Warsi had been used in a role that made use of comic sensibilities like never before. The cult classic movie is still one of his career best efforts till date which also got him a nomination at the Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Actor along with other Awards. The following year he was cast by Priyadarsan in the romantic comic entertainer flick Hulchul where he served as the ever hilarious side kick to Akshaye Khanna along with Kareena Kapoor in the lead, The movie further added to his promise in comic roles and got him many Awards. Arshad Warsi then went on to play major roles in movies like Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye and Sehar which also saw the actor in him thriving without the humour gimmicks. He followed up with films like Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiyaa, Salaam Namaste and Chocolate. Subsequent golden patch and other films ( 2006-2016) Arshad Warsi had a big break yet again when he was cast alongside Ajay Devgn, Sharman Joshi and Tusshar Kapoor in Rohit Shetty’s comic blockbuster Golmaal: Fun Unlimited in the year 2006. The ground smashing success of the movie took his career to new heights and the film saw him sweeping away all the honours with his impeccable comic timing. After an uneventful Anthony Kaun Hai , he reprised his original character in the sequel outing Lage Raho Munna Bhai which went on to fetch him his very first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor that year. He then bagged critical acclaim for his roles in movies like Kabul Express, Dhammal, Mr White Mr Black . He continued his antics in Golmaal Returns, Shortcut and many others. Warsi landed in his dream role when he was cast alongside Naseeruddin Shah and Vidya Balan in Abhishek Chaubey’s black comedy flick Ishqiya. The film had him playing a criminal who along with his partner in crime who starts developing feelings toward the widow of their friend who gives them shelter. The super hit movie was received well by the critics and was a surprise part for Warsi.
