Sridevi has been titled as the First Female Superstar of the Bollywood and Hindi Cinema. She started her career as a child artist in M.A. Thirumuham’s Devotional film called the Thunaivan at the age of four and continued to act in a child role for many other films in Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam and Kannada films. She made her debut in Hindi films as a Child Artist in the film ‘ Julie ’ in 1975 and played her first adult role at the age of 13 as a leading actress in the Tamil film Moondru Mudichu in 1976. She established herself as one of the leading actresses of Tamil and Telegu cinema before she joined the Hindi film industry. In Bollywood her debut as an adult and a lead role was in the film Solva Sawan in 1978 and from then on she went on to act in many more films like Himmatwala in 1983, Mawaali, Tohfa in 1984 which was again a super hit film that gained her the stardom in the Indian Film Industry specifically the Hindi film world. She acted in many more films like Masterji , Maqsad , Narana, Mr. India , Waqk Ki Awaz , Chandni , Sadma , Nagina , Chaalbaaz , Lamhe , Khuda Gawah , Gumrah , Laadla , Judaai which was one of her last few films in 1997. In 2012 after a long sabbatical from the films she returned to do a film after 15 years with ‘ English Vinglish ’ and was one of the only actresses in the Indian Cinema whose come back after years was a success story. In 1989, Sridevi did her double role playing a twin sister in the film Chaalbaaz for which she won the Filmfare 80 Iconic Performances of Hindi Cinema. Her folk dance in this film Morni Baga Ma… was a rage and was placed in the Top 5 of the chartbusters. It was a huge success with the metropolitan elites and the overseas markets but in small villages and lower class it was considered an incest theme so was the talk of the town with some negative publicity. Overall the film did extremely well and is one of the films remembered along with the role of Sridevi which is much appreciated by her fans and audience. Sridevi announced her come back in 2011 with the film English Vinglish directed by Gauri Shinde. Her return was officially announced at the IIFA Awards the same year held in Toronto. Her role in this film was compared with Meryl Streep of India.
