Biography
"Jackie Shroff the dashing looking actor soon became popular for his looks and also did a small role as a villain in the film Heera Panna in 1973 which had Dev Anand in the lead role. After his hit film Hero he signed up many more films and gave another hit film Andar Baahar in 1984 co-starring with Anil Kapoor. Since then there was no looking back for the actor and he acted in films close to as 150 with a career span that started in the year 1973 . Since 2000 he reappeared in a variety of films in character roles as a villain, comedian and even a ghost in Bhoot Unkle in 2006. He proclaims his fan following for the yester heroine Asha Parekh. He did several films like Osho Raja that was shelved and few other films that never saw the limelight.However that did not stop Jackie Shroff in his attempt to make it big. He has acted as special appearance in many films like Pyar Hamari Zindagi in 1990 produced by Ramsingh Thakur and D. R. Chandra Jackie Shroff has been in the film Industry since the early 80’s and has not only acted in Hindi films but has also acted in Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil and Telegu, and is said to have acted in over 200 films till date. His first film was in Dev Anand’s Swami Dada in the year 1982 . In 1983, he was cast in the lead role for the film Hero paired with Meenakshi Seshadri. The film was a super success with which Jackie Shroff established himself as a Bollywood actor. He continued to work with the Subhash Ghai banner . After the success of the film Hero he acted in several other films like Andar Baahar, Jaanoo and Yudh which was a successful film. In 1986 he acted in the film Karma which is said to be one of the highest grossing films of that year . What followed was his films like Kaash, Dahleez and Sacche Ka Bol Bala which were critically acclaimed films but failed to do well at the Box Office. Although he earned the name and fame , success and recognition, it was mostly by the supporting roles he acted in that captured the audience interest . In 1992 in the film Angaar he played the role of youth who is frustrated with the corrupt system. His role in the film Gardish in 1993 is still remembered by his fans and is considered to be one of the best of his work till date, in which he plays the role of a common man fighting against society criminal entities. His other popular supporting actor roles are the films Rangeela as a Superstar , Ram Sinha Police Inspector in the film Khalnayak, Chunnila in 2002 Devdas and a freedom fighter in the film Sbhuhankar in 1942 A Love Story. He also played the role of a villain in the most recent, Happy New Year by Farha Khan. Recently he won the accolades for his outstanding performance in the 2005 Bengali Film Antar Mahal directed by Rituparno Ghosh. And a few more comedy films like Bhagam Bhag, Apna Sapna Money Money. In 2007 he appeared in the multi-starrer film Fool and Final by Ahmed Khan. He did a film Aaina a Yashraj film with Amrita Singh and Juhi Chawla. The films that he has done are Jaanoo, Mard Ki Zabaan, Daku Hasina, Falak, Ram Lakhan, Sikka, Vardi, 100 Days, Saudagar, King Uncle, Khalnayak, Hasti, Angaar, Police Officer, 1942 A Love Story , Gardish , Stuntman, Milan, Trimurti, Agni Saakshi, Kalinga, Talaashi, Return Of Jewel Thief , Bandish, Share Bazaar, Border,Shapath, Gang, Jung, Refugee, Mission Kashmir, One 2 Ka 4 , Halla Bol, and Shakti to name a few ."
Career & Achievements
"Jackie Shroff has won quite a few Awards and also has been nominated several times . His first award was for the film Parinda where he received the Filmfare Best Actor Award. Followed by Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his 1942 A Love Story in 1995, in 1996 he won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for Rangeela . Therafter he won many nominations for various categories between the years 1994 to 2003. He won the Best Supporting Actor Award for Devdas and his role as Chunilal is remembered by many of his fans as one of his best performances on the Indian Screen. . In 2007, Jackie won the Special Honour Jury Award for Outstanding contribution to Indian Cinema. He is the Life member of the International Film and Television Club of Asian Academy of Film and Television. He has teamed up with Mihir Pandya, an industrialist and together they have plans of building a mini Film City near Nal Sarovar in the city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Jackie Shroff is known to contribute in a big way for the under privileged and the less fortunate."
